IN a sinister twist of fate Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry Mubaiwa is now being charged with attempted murder.
The former Commander Defence Forces who masterminded the November 2017 coup is the complainant in the matter that was brought before Harare Magistrate against the 38 year-old former model.
Mubaiwa will not enjoy Christmas after a Harare Magistrate Christen Mberewere decided she be remanded in custody with indications her lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa will approach the High Court for relief.
Prosecutors Monday claimed Mubaiwa who is facing a litany of charges including externalising over US$1 million also attempted to kill her then ailing husband early this year as he battled for his life in hospital.
She was arrested last Saturday facing charges of using false pretense to spirit over US$1 million in cash out of the country.
“On 22 June 2019, the complainant was airlifted to South Africa for emergency medical attention. However, upon arrival, the accused forced the complainant to stay at Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria.
“On 23 June, accused kept on denying complainant access to medical treatment and the security team had to force their way to take the complainant to Netcare Hospital,” the charge sheet read in part.
It is also claimed by prosecutors that Mubaiwa daughter to former Dynamos chairman Kenny also unlawfully removed a medical Intra Venous Giving Set and Central Catheter inserted on VP Chiwenga forcing him to bleed “profusely”.
“On July 8, 2019, at about 10PM, the accused came to the hospital with the intent to cause serious harm to the complainant,” according to the charges.
“She ordered the security personnel to excuse her saying she wanted privacy with the complainant… Whilst alone with the complainant, accused unlawfully removed the medical intravenous giving set as well as central venous catheter which were inserted into the complainant and the complainant started bleeding profusely,” prosecutors claimed.
It is further alleged that Mubaiwa forced Chiwenga off the bed, held him by hand and started walking out of the private warn before being intercepted by security agents.
“The accused disappeared from the hospital after the hospital staff was alerted by the security personal. The accused had no right whatsoever to act in the manner she did,” the charges reveal.
Mubaiwa was remanded in custody to December 30 and advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
In the other charges brought by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) Mubaiwa is accused of illegally transferring US$919,000 to South Africa under the guise of importing goods between October 2018 and May this year.
Prosecutors argue the goods were never delivered.
Instead, she allegedly bought a R3 million home at Waterkloof Golf Estate, an exclusive Pretoria neighbourhood, as well as acquiring two Range Rover SUVs.
The ZACC is also accusing Mubaiwa of fraudulently obtaining a marriage certificate without Chiwenga’s consent earlier this year when the Vice President was indisposed. The two have been married under Zimbabwe’s customary law since 2011.
